Sheridan Middle School, a new facility completed in 1994, in accommodating approximately 280 students in grades 6-8, recognizes the unique academic and emotional needs of the students.
Middle school teachers continue the emphasis on basic skills begun in elementary school and expand the curriculum through minicourses. Seventh graders take minicourses in art, music, home economics, and industrial arts, while eighth graders experience agriculture, chorus, manufacturing and computer creative writing.
Special academic opportunities abound. Middle school students of exceptional academic ability may be offered honors courses in English and/or math. Additionally, students identified for the gifted and talented program may continue SOAR by participating in specially offered minicourses. For help in all subject areas, those identified as learning disabled are able to work with an LD resource teacher. Due to the school's participation in programs like I-STAR and SEEQ, all students are better able to build self-esteem and deal with social pressures.
Sheridan teachers and administrators encourage and expect academic excellence with such programs as honor roll recognition, perfect attendance, and special end-of-the-year awards assembly.
Twenty teachers, a middle school counselor, a middle school dean, and two building principals are directly involved with the members of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to ensure that the foundation is laid for the subsequent productive four years of high school.
